Queer Artist Illustrating Whimsical and Horrifying Things

Artist Statement

I am a queer artist exploring the beauty in my life and the creatures around me, as well as creating unsettling and occasionally whimsical representations of the horror. Primarily drawing with ink pen or graphite pencil, I also incorporate marker, watercolor, and embroidery thread to add color and texture that highlights narratives within. My style ranges from smudged, sketch-like illustrations to detailed realism, capturing a wide emotional landscape.

I tend to see my art as a piece of myself, and want them to feel alive. Many themes in my art are uncomfortable to look at, because they are often inspired by my own experiences with mental health struggles and societal pressures to stay silent about them. I want people to almost get lost in the details of his work at times, so they are forced to look, even when it is uncomfortable to see. It is much more uncomfortable to feel. The smaller details can be seen as easter eggs, almost like rewards for those who don’t glance and walk away. Geometric and spiral patterns are recurring motifs, which mimic some of the coping mechanisms I’ve learned over the years.

I hope that viewers can find connections to their own lives. Through my perspective as a transgender man navigating mental health, I aim to create art that is both meaningful and impactful, whether that is through a joyful image or by reminding viewers that they are not alone in their struggles.
